Steve Johnston (vocals, guitars, percussion, harmonica, songwriter) has written some musically diverse songs that the explore a very unique musical landscape that is a hallmark of Sonic Alchemy. From hard rocking alternative, classic, psychedelic, shoegaze, to acoustic songs and garage rock songs, the Singles, EP's and albums named Ethereal and Quintessential (acoustic focused album), Goddess and Rolling Like Thunder nail several musical genres. They reflect the musicians' varied influences and roots. On all of the new EP/Singles feature Steve Johnston on all electric/acoustic rhythm and lead guitars, vocals and all percussion and outstanding guest musicians on bass and drums.
New release: Rolling Like Thunder is an exposé on war and its effects on society: it's hard hitting, musically diverse and with excellent lyrics, it's one of the best anti-war albums of all time. It also features for the first time some cover songs echoing the vision of the album as recorded/mixed by Steve a low fidelity fashion on to tape recording devices (with tape hiss) and with vintage analog mics and other equipment to recreate a sense of age that the cover songs require to be authentic.
Steve also for the first time performs all drums (and all other parts) on Rolling Like Thunder (tribal mix)
The new albums, Quintessential and Goddess is a re-working of Ethereal and other releases (some unplugged versions of popular songs from Ethereal).
Goddess has featured very talented female singers from around the world to sing Sonic Alchemy classics adding a whole new dimension to the songs. The collaboration on the album is amazing and produces an excellent album.
Steve is working and collaborating on his next releases with music artists from around the world. Artificial Intelligence highlights a rock lyrics and Indian music fusion from his 1960's influences. Infinite Repeat a song about the low compensation of Spotify, features a version with a female music artist from Urugay.
The lyrics of Sonic Alchemy that Steve writes are grounded in rock and roll yet poetic and poignant. All the songs are expertly made and recorded at high quality studios. The music is produced, recorded, and mixed by Steve Johnston, Michael Mahan (of the band Spectacle) and Jamie Hillyer. The collection of work is sure to make an impact on the rock and roll scene.
Sonic Alchemy play originals and covers live. Alternative, Indie, Grunge, and originals pepper the eclectic and musically intriguing set list. The band also hosts excellent guest vocalists and other musicians to keep the music dynamic, fluid and ever-changing. Just like a box of chocolates spiked with tequila, you don't really know what is going to be served up...but it's going to be a musical journey and it will be sweet.
Steve Johnston is now releasing a plethora of new music in 2024- stay tuned. He will be releasing another full length album in November and a live album after that.
